The Game of Life; Life Lessons from Gaming What mastery gaming must have over life to be able to deceive billions of us into playing virtual games for hours every day as though they were real life. It used to be just the geeks. Now it’s the geeks, their families, their friends, even their girlfriends / boyfriends. Everyone is doing it.

Some are building cities in Cityville, others destroying cities in Battlefield Bad Company 2. Some are building muscles in Your Shape, others destroying them in UFC Undisputed 3. We’re all earning money, spending money, creating lives and friends, coming to know and learning to develop characters and in-game relationships. Games make real life activities so much more fun, exciting and, let’s face it, easier. Imagine if you could turn real life into a game by following the lead of those games designers who entertain billions for hours every day. Imagine if you could feel that sense of power you get from being Master Chief, Solid Snake or (my favourite) Ryu. Well, now you can. Tough pill to swallow, right? Why can’t life be like game?

“Because games aren’t real!” is the answer everyone yells. Do you believe games are fun because they are fake? most people do. But frankly, such a weak argument just isn’t going to cut it.

Fake burgers don’t taste nice. Fake girlfriends are only for the most desperate and socially outcast among us. Fake money won’t go far. Fake tits feel like trash. Almost everything that is fake is lesser than its real-life counterpart. Yet gaming makes fake feel great.
